A great set from that unique small combo moment in the career of vibist Lionel Hampton – that Verve Records stretch when he stepped away from his big band, and cut a handful of small group records that really let him open up on the vibes! This set's one of the best from that time – and features a quartet with Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums.

The album has four tracks on it, with Just One of Those Things and Stompin' at the Savoy on Side 1 and How High the Moon and The Nearness of You on Side 2. Lionel Hampton, the King of the Vibes, has a special place in my heart after seeing him play many years ago at the Lionel Hampton School of Music in Moscow, Idaho, during the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival along with other jazz .

Here is the 12th volume in the complete chronological recordings of Lionel Hampton as reissued by the Classics label. It opens with Hamp's final five recordings for the MGM label, waxed in Los Angeles on October 17, This was a piece big band using charts written by Quincy Jones, and the music it made feels much different from what's to be heard in the next leg of Lionel Hampton's.
